Recording is an art, but we’re here to make it easier!
Our Stellar Microphones are designed to be versatile, robust, and user-friendly. However, achieving the best sound quality starts with proper technique. As the recording engineer, there are key steps you can take to ensure successful recordings every time.
Common Audio Challenges:
- Wind: Windy conditions can introduce low-frequency “rumble” into your recordings.
- Handling Noise: Physical contact or movement can cause unwanted noise.
- Plosives: Sounds like “P” and “B,” when spoken directly into the mic, can create bursts of wind noise.
- Crosstalk/Bleed: Unwanted sounds from other sources, such as participants in a group recording, can bleed into the microphone.
- Unwanted Ambience: Your recording environment may introduce undesirable acoustics.
- Noise: From electrical interference (e.g., AC hum, mobile phones) to environmental sounds (e.g., traffic, birds), and even the mic’s own internal noise
How can we reduce the impact of these issues?
Fortunately, as a Sound Capsule user, you can upload your recordings to Nomono Cloud, where our advanced AI enhancement processor tackles many of these challenges. Noise, unwanted ambience, crosstalk, and wind can all be minimized with Nomono Cloud’s processing.
However, it’s essential to capture the best possible sound initially to optimize the enhancement process. The following steps will help address a few remaining challenges:
Key challenges to focus on:
- Handling noise
- Plosives
- Excessive wind
Solution:
- Wind: Use the provided windbreakers to minimize wind interference effectively. These attachments can drastically reduce unwanted wind noise.
- Plosives: Avoid positioning the Stellar Mic directly in front of the speaker’s mouth. This will prevent bursts of wind caused by plosive sounds from directly hitting the microphone.
- Handling Noise: Since the Stellar Mic is a clip-on device, there is minimal risk of direct handling noise. However, certain types of loose clothing may cause the mic to shift or rustle. Ensure the microphone is securely placed to avoid movement.
- Awareness: Because the Stellar Mic is small and discreet, users may forget they are wearing it. Remind your guests that the microphone is active, and monitor their behavior. If they tend to touch or adjust the mic, consider repositioning it to prevent interference.
By taking these precautions, you’ll set yourself up for a clean, professional recording every time. The Stellar Mic and Nomono Cloud work together to ensure your audio sounds its best with minimal effort.
Stellar Mic Placement
The Stellar Mic is an omnidirectional microphone, meaning it captures sound from all directions. If it’s accidentally positioned upside down, it will still record the sound well, though the sound may have a slightly reduced clarity.
For optimal results, position the Stellar Mic on the chest, with the microphone side facing towards the speaker. Avoid placing Stellar Mics on the neck or around potential sources of interference, such as loose clothing.
